Never a Dull Moment: A Look at Ibiza’s Year-Round Fiestas
The Spaniards love to party, and the fun-loving Balearics are no different. At certain points of the year the island of Ibiza erupts into a blase of colour as vivacious fiestas take place.
The carnival-esque processions, which are often accompanied by spectacular firework displays that you can see from your villas in Ibiza to rent, are important cultural events that celebrate a saints’ day. There are also fiestas which take place every year to commemorate landmarks in the island’s history.
Below is a list of fiestas that should not be missed when renting a villa in San Carlos Ibiza:
January: During the first two weeks of January the village of Sant Antoni de Portmany celebrates the Festival de Sa Nostra Terra, with traditional dancing, music and songs.
The 5th January is a particularly special day across the island, and one to be enjoyed by guests renting a villa in San Carlos Ibiza over Christmas and New Year. It is the start of Los Reyes Magos, where families get together and give presents.
February: It’s carnival month and the best places to go in Ibiza to see the processions with colourful floats and music are Ibiza Town and Sant Miquel de Balansat.
Easter: There are several processions which take place on the Thursday and Good Friday before Easter. A real treat for those hiring a villa to rent in Ibiza for in the Spring.
May: On the first Sunday in May there is a wonderfully colourful fiesta in Santa Eularia des Riu. The festival is one of the island’s oldest, and celebrates the narrow escape of the town of Santa Eulària’s parishioners when their church collapsed into the sea.
June: From the night of the 23rd to the 24th, the Balearics celebrate the arrival of summer in a festival called Sant Joan. It began as a pagan festival and bonfires are still lit across the island.
July: On July 16th the islanders commemorate la Senyora del Carmen, Saint of seafarers. The main processions take place in Ibiza Town and Es Cubells, and the colorful processions are worth a trip from your villa in San Carlos Ibiza. Particularly striking is when a statue of the Virgin is carried through the streets by the island’s fishermen and placed in a boat, which then leads a flotilla of vessels around the harbour.
August: From the 4th to the 8th, Ibiza celebrates the Fiesta de la Terre, or de Nostra Senyora de les Neus and the commemoration of the Christians taking over the Island again. Events include the Day of the Virgin on the 5th, and Sant Ciriac on the 8th, which marks the Catalan conquest of the island from the Moors in 1235.
September: Santa Eulària des Riu erupts into song and dance once again when the Fiesta de Jesus takes place.
On the 29th September the island celebrates the Patron Festival of Sant Miquel de Balansat, with dances, fairs and races.
