During recent years the reputation of tiny San Carlos has grown in step with that of the northern part of Ibiza in general. Home of original Hippie hang-out Anita’s bar which doubles up as meeting point and post office, San Carlos remains an artist haven. Some hippies have stayed on and now display their paintings in the bar; others peddle their wares at the weekly hippie market held in one of the village restaurants.

Although the village remains small it’s a busy place; gateway to Ibiza’s less explored north with roads branching off to serve the beach populations around Cala Leña, Cala Mastella and Cala Llenya. An interesting feature of San Carlos are the more than one hundred coloured post-boxes which still adorn the walls of the Anita’s Bar and the village street.

The village centre is graced by a beautiful white-washed typical Ibicencan church, more akin to a colonnaded villa perhaps. In keeping with the artistic tradition of San Carlos this beautiful 18th Century edifice plays host to an annual international piano competition.
